High Sierra Workshops offers photography workshops in spectacular locations around the world in order to teach participants “how to read the scene, …how to see the light, …[and] how to make photographs that aren’t snapshots.”
As part of that effort, they’ve been posting articles meant to foster a deeper understanding of photography. In “Is a Handheld Lightmeter Better than the In-Camera Meter?,” they explain “Cameras do not have incident meters, as they are only reading the reflected light. Incident metering can only be found in hand held meters. And the reliable accuracy of incident meters makes them a mainstay for most professional photographers.”
Depending on your photographic needs, they recommend Sekonic’s L-308, L-478DR, and L-758DR.
Check out the article, and if you’re feeling adventurous, sign up for a workshop.
